A German Orientalist; born at Tondern, Dec. 14, 1734; died at Rostock, Dec. 30, 1815. His greatest work is "Leisure Hours at Butzow" (6 vols., 1766-69), a valuable repertory of Jewish history and erudition. He also wrote: "Elements of Arabic" (1792); "Elements of Syriac" (1793); "Syriac Natural Science" (1795).
