An American scholar and literary critic; born at Stamford, Conn., 1856. He is a graduate of Columbia College, and professor of Latin in that institution, now Columbia University. Since 1895 he has been the American editor of the Bookman. Among his works are: "The Semitic Theory of Creation" (1886); "Suetonius" (1889); "Latin Pronunciation" (1890); "Dictionary of Classical Antiquities and Literature"; "Twenty Years of the Republic".
