A German mineralogist and geologist; born at Eisleben, July 9, 1809; died Dec. 21, 1889, at Tubingen, where he was professor in the university. Among his works are: "Epochs of Nature" (1861), "Then and Now" (1856), popular expositions of geology; "Manual of Mineralogy".
