(1732-1799), the brilliant author of the "Barbier de Seville"and the "Mariage de Figaro", rendered highly valuable services to the American cause in the Revolutionary War, persuading the French government to send the Americans large amounts of money, arms and ammunition, and extensively using his own credit in their behalf. The debt of the American government to him was never discharged.
