pseudonym of Johannes Scheffler. A German mystic and sacred poet (1624-77), brought up in the Lutheran faith, but in 1653 embraced Catholicism, in 1661 was ordained priest, and in 1664 became councilor of the Prince-Bishop of Breslau. His poems, some of which are exquisite sacred lyrics, appeared collected as "Spiritual Joys" (1657) and "Cherubic Wanderer" (1675).
