(1824-1887), was a member of the Ohio Legislature from 1857 to 1860, serving as Speaker of the House in 1858. He was commissioned a lieutenant-colonel of Ohio volunteers, and fought at Shiloh, Arkansas Post, Resaca, Dallas, Atlanta, Lovejoy Station and Bentonville. He led a division in Sherman's march to the sea. He was a U. S. Circuit Judge from 1869 to 1880, when he became a Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court.
