A name given to different substances, employed for embellishing the complexion or rendering the skin softer. The substances most commonly used for this purpose are :-the Subnitrate of Bismuth, (F.) Blanc de fard. A spirituous solution of benzoin, precipitated by water, and forming Virgin’s milk, (F.) Lait virginal; the red or rouge of the carthamus; Spanish white; the oxides of lead, tin, and mercury, vermilion, red saunders, &c. All paints may be said to be noxious. They injure the skin; obstruct perspiration; and, thus, frequently lay the foundation for cutaneous affections. See Cosmetic.
