-
A characteristic color test for uric acid. It consists of carefully heating a trace of the crystalline acid with a drop of nitric acid on a porcelain surface until the nitric acid has been evaporated and a red coloration appears. Upon the addition of ammonia the color becomes purple, owing to the formation of murexid. It is a very sensitive test. [Lat.]
