(1782-1841), entered the U.S. army in 1799, and at the outbreak of the War of 1812 was adjutant-general of the army. Taking service in the field he, in September, 1814, won the victory of Plattsburg over Sir George Provost, and was made major-general. From 1835 to 1841 he was commander-in-chief of the army.
