A French archaeologist; born at Paris, Jan. 2, 1787; died there, Dec. 14, 1848. He is distinguished chiefly for his studies in numismatics and inscriptions. Among his writings are: "Topography of Syracuse" (1813); "Fragments of Hero of Alexandria" (1816); "Valuings of Greek and Roman Coins" (1817); "Materials to Serve for a History of the Christian Religion" (1833); "The Vocal Statue of Memnon" (1833); "Collection of Greek and Latin Inscriptions from Egypt" (1842-48).
