(1744-1822), came to America from Ireland as a British soldier. He was a delegate from South Carolina to the Old Congress in 1787, was a member of the convention that framed the Federal Constitution, and signed the Constitution. He represented South Carolina in the U. S. Senate from 1789 to 1796 and from 1802 to 1804.
