An American educator and philosophical writer; born at Geneva, N. Y., 1827. He was president of the University of Wisconsin (1874-87). He has written a number of philosophical works, among them: "Philosophy of English Literature" (1874), lectures before the Lowell Institute; "Comparative Psychology" (1878); "Sociology" (1887), etc.
