A French dramatist; born in Paris, Dec. 25, 1806; died there, Jan. 12, 1871. He wrote about 200 comedies, vaudevilles, melodramas, often in collaboration with Barbier, Ducange, Feval, Labiche, and others; while on the other hand he is the real and sole author of some of the best plays ascribed to the elder Dumas (for instance "Teresa", "Angele", "Catherine Howard"). Among his own productions the following deserve mention: "The Venetian" (1834); "The Poor Girl" (1838); "Stella" (1843).
