An Italian theologian and Doctor of the Church; born at Naples, 1696; died Aug. 1, 1787. While bishop of Sant' Agata de' Goti, he founded the religious congregation of Redemptorists. He was\" beatified" in 1816; canonized in 1839; proclaimed\" Doctor of the Universal Church" in 1871. He wrote "Moral Theology" (ed. of 1881, 8 vols.), and many books of devotion.
